Lu Yonglong (China-CAST) is currently the Director General of the Bureau of International Cooperation, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Chair and Research Professor, Environmental Management and Policy Group at Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, CAS. His wide range of research interests include ecological impacts of persistent toxic substances, sustainability sciences, environmental management and policy, and strategic planning of science and technology development.

VICE-PRESIDENT

Holm Tiessen (Germany) leads the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research based in San José dos Campos, Brazil. He has worked in the areas of nutrient availability and cycling in natural and agricultural ecosystems; carbon cycling; soil organic matter turnover and stabilisation; tropical landuse; drivers of and constraints on agricultural development. Dr Tiessen has more than 20 years of professional experience in science and science management, and international program funding.

Jon Samseth (Norway-IUPAP) is professor in energy physics at the Department of Technology, Art and Design at Oslo and Akershus University College (HiOA) and adjunct professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. He is also science advisor in the Department of Process Technology at SINTEF materials and chemistry, also based in Norway.

Ahmed M. Hassan Farghally (Egypt) is professor of environmental cost accounting, Faculty of Commerce, Cairo University, Egypt. Prof. Farghally has published numerous papers on environmental accounting and sustainable development and participated in the development of research projects on pollution, biodiversity conservation and economic valuation.

SECRETARY GENERAL

Mary C. Scholes (South Africa), a graduate of the University of the Witwatersrand, is currently a full professor in the School of Animal, Plant and Environmental Sciences and serves as the Assistant Dean for Postgraduate Studies in the Faculty of Science. Her research activities focus on soil fertility and biogeochemistry in savannas, plantation forests and croplands.

Magdy Attia Mohamed (Egypt) is Professor and Chairman of the Microbiology Department at the National Research Center, Dokki, Cairo. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from Ain Shams University and his Ph.D. from Al Azhar University. His research work and activities cover a number of areas in soil microbiology; biological nitrogen fixation, phosphorus transformation, bio-organic farming and recycling of organic wastes. His areas of proficiency include modern biotechnology, molecult biology, genetic engineering, microbial ecology, microbial biogeochemistry, taxonomy of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, soil biology and biochemistry and biological nitrogen fixation. He has published more than 50 articles in specialized journals.

Chang-Hung Chou (China-The Academy located in Taipei) is Dean of the College of Life Sciences and chair Professor and Director of the Research Center for Biodiversity, China Medical University, Taiwan. He obtained his Ph.D. at UC Santa Barbara in 1971 and was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto in 1972.

Luiz A. Martinelli is professor at the Centro de Energia Nuclear na Agricultura, University of São Paulo in Brazil. His research into the ecology and geochemistry of the Amazon Basin has earned him recognition as one of Brazil's leading scientists in his field. In addition to publishing numerous papers in scientific journals, over the past several years Dr. Martinelli has participated in numerous SCOPE projects, and served on the steering committee of the INI-International Nitrogen Initiative, a joint SCOPE-IGBP programme. He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Science.

Annelies Pierrot-Bults (The Netherlands-SCOR) is currently Guest Scientist at the Zoological Museum Amsterdam, University of Amsterdam and was formerly the Head of the Vermes/Marine Plankton Department at the Museum. She obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Amsterdam and was a member of the Faculty there. Her main research interests are taxonomy of Chaetognatha and Zooplankton Biogeography. In addition to her numerous publications, she is widely involved in international programmes (IOC/UNESCO, IUBS, SCOR, Census of Marine Zooplankton), national scientific organisations and national and international womens’ issues councils.
