SCOPE MEMBERSHIP
As an international non-governmental organisation founded in 1969, SCOPE is
recognised for authoritative, independent and influential scientific analyses and
assessments of emerging environmental issues that are caused by or impact on
humans and the environment. As it moves through its 4th decade, now is the time for
SCOPE to build on this strong basis to renew, refocus and reinforce its energies and
objectives. SCOPE's mandate focuses on sound state-of-the–art and policy-relevant
environmental strategic thinking, analysis and assessments.
WHO IS - OR CAN - BE INVOLVED
The membership of SCOPE between 1970 and 2009 was limited to specific
organizations. Membership opened up in 2010, in order to better implement
SCOPE's unique cross-sectoral, interdisciplinary, and independent approach
to formulate science-based options and recommendations for assessments,
identification of emerging issues and policy development.
SCOPE's broader membership base includes:
- Governmental and inter-governmental organisations
- Scientific and technical research and assessment bodies such as
academies, science councils or associations (its historical members)
- Educational institutions such as universities
- Non-governmental and civil society organisations
- Industry and the private sector

HOW SCOPE OPERATES
SCOPE develops state-of-the-art scientific knowledge for understanding of
environmental issues to better meet policy and development needs
- based on robust science-driven agenda relevant to policy development;
- responding to regional priorities to deliver insights of global significance;
- providing rapid assessments of key environmental issues;
- linking research outputs to the end users; and
- guiding research processes founded on partnerships.
SCOPE's current science portfolio can broadly be characterised as
syntheses of existing information, formulation of balanced appraisals, stimulation of
new approaches, and identification of important research needs.
